About IUDs and Mirena Devices
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
There are two main types:
-
Hormonal IUDs (Mirena or Kyleena) – release a small amount of progesterone to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years.
-
Copper IUDs – hormone-free and effective for up to 10 years.
Why Choose an IUD?
Many women prefer IUDs because they:
-
Offer long-term, low-maintenance contraception
-
Can help reduce period pain or bleeding (with Mirena)
-
Are suitable for women who can’t take oestrogen-based pills
-
Allow natural fertility to return quickly after removal
Dr Kemm is trained in both Mirena and copper IUD insertion and removal, and ensures each procedure is handled with skill, care, and respect for your comfort.
What to Expect
Your Initial Consultation
Before insertion, you’ll need a consultation with Dr Kemm to:
-
Review your medical history and discuss contraception options
-
Explain the procedure, risks, and after-care
-
Confirm the best time in your cycle for insertion
This appointment helps ensure the IUD is safe and suitable for you.
The Day of Your Procedure
-
A local anaesthetic is used for comfort
-
The process takes around 10–15 minutes, though we allow up to 45 minutes to give you plenty of time to ask questions and rest
-
You may experience mild cramping or spotting afterwards
A light meal beforehand and over-the-counter pain relief can make the experience more comfortable.
Aftercare
You can return to normal activities the next day, though some patients prefer to rest for the afternoon.
Cramping or light bleeding is common for a few days.
You’ll be advised when to check your IUD strings and when to return for a follow-up.
IUD Removals
If it’s time to remove or replace your IUD, Dr Kemm can safely remove it in-clinic. Fertility returns almost immediately after removal, so additional contraception is needed if you don’t wish to become pregnant.
