Childhood and Scheduled Immunisations
Immunisation is one of the most effective public health measures of the past 200 years, protecting individuals and communities from serious illnesses that can cause hospitalisation, long-term health problems, or even death. The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program provides a carefully planned schedule of vaccines throughout childhood — ensuring children are protected at the right stages of development.
At Emerald Medical Centre, we stock all vaccines on the schedule, which are supplied free of charge under the program. Our highly experienced nurse immunisers are available every day except Sunday to provide safe and supportive care for your family.
Please note:
-
Vaccines should be postponed if someone is unwell with a fever.
-
After each vaccination, you’ll be asked to remain at the clinic for 15 minutes for safety monitoring.
-
Mild side effects such as temporary soreness, redness, or discomfort at the injection site are common.
Flu Vaccination
A new influenza (flu) vaccine is developed each year to protect against the strains most likely to circulate. At Emerald Medical Centre, flu vaccines are usually available from April/May each year.
The Australian Government provides free flu vaccines for people at higher risk, including:
-
Children aged 6 months to 4 years inclusive
-
Adults aged 65 years and over
-
Pregnant women
-
People with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, or weakened immune systems
For patients not eligible for the government-funded program, we also offer private flu vaccinations through our practice nurses for $20.
Protecting yourself with the flu vaccine each year not only reduces your risk of serious illness but also helps protect those around you.
Travel Vaccinations
If you’re planning an overseas trip, it’s important to protect your health by ensuring your vaccinations are up to date. At Emerald Medical Centre, our GPs can provide a range of travel vaccinations to help keep you safe while abroad.
You will first need an appointment with your GP to discuss your travel plans and medical history. In some cases, your doctor may order blood tests to determine which vaccinations are required. A follow-up appointment is usually needed to review results and administer the vaccines.
Please note:
-
Doctor’s consultations are billed at standard rates.
-
Travel vaccines are not covered by Medicare and are charged as full out-of-pocket costs (no concessions apply).
-
A price list for travel vaccines is available at reception.
-
Some private health insurers may provide a rebate — check with your provider for details.
-
Yellow Fever vaccinations are not available at Emerald Medical Centre. Patients requiring this vaccine will need to attend a dedicated travel vaccination clinic.
