ECGs at Emerald Medical Centre

An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of your heart. It’s a quick, painless test that helps your GP check your heart rhythm and look for signs of heart problems.

If your GP recommends an ECG, it can usually be done here at the clinic, as ECG machines are available on site. Melbourne Pathology, our on-site pathology provider, also offers ECGs and Holter monitors (24-hour heart monitoring), which is often a convenient option for non-urgent ECGs.

If you have chest pain or think you’re having a heart attack, call 000 immediately.

ECGs: Your Questions Answered

An ECG records your heart’s electrical activity to check your heart rate and rhythm and look for signs of heart problems.
Yes. Your GP will assess you first and decide whether an ECG is needed. If it is, it can usually be done here at the clinic, or through Melbourne Pathology, our on-site pathology provider, for non-urgent ECGs.
Small sticky pads (electrodes) are placed on your chest, arms and legs, and you lie still for a few minutes while the machine records your heart. It’s painless and usually takes about 5–10 minutes.
Wear a top that’s easy to remove or open, and avoid body lotion or oil on your chest on the day so the pads stick well.
ECGs are usually sent to a cardiologist for review. Your GP can often share preliminary findings on the spot, and will follow up with you if anything further is needed.
Yes. Holter monitors (24-hour heart monitoring) are available through Melbourne Pathology, our on-site pathology provider. Your GP will arrange this if it’s needed.
