The Silent Health Risks Hiding in Your Family History

Understanding your family medical history can help identify potential health risks and guide earlier screening and preventive care. Dr Safire Valentine and Jonathon Somers from Emerald Medical Centre explain what to ask your family and why these conversations matter for your long-term health.

Recently, I decided to ask my family a few questions about our medical history. What conditions had my parents or grandparents experienced? Were there significant illnesses or diagnoses I should know about? I gathered the answers and saved them in a note on my phone, ready for future medical appointments.

It was a simple exercise, but one that could make a real difference to my health.

Why does family history matter?

Many common conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune conditions and certain cancers, can run in families. While a family history doesn’t mean you’ll develop the same condition, it can increase your risk and influence when screening or preventive care should begin.

For example, a close relative diagnosed with bowel cancer at a younger age may mean you need earlier screening.

Real examples from general practice

Dr Safire Valentine from Emerald Medical Centre has seen firsthand how understanding family history can change a patient’s healthcare.

One woman in her 30s discovered a strong family history of breast cancer after speaking with relatives. This prompted a referral for genetic assessment and a decision to begin breast screening earlier than usual.

Another patient, a man in his 20s with a strong family history of heart disease, underwent early blood pressure and cholesterol checks. These identified elevated levels requiring treatment, potentially reducing his risk of a future heart attack.

What should you find out?

Start with your parents, siblings and grandparents. Ask about major medical conditions, the age they were diagnosed and, where relevant, causes of death. Don’t forget both sides of your family.

You don’t need a perfect family tree. Even a few key details can help your GP understand your health risks.

Next time you’re with family, start the conversation. Save what you learn somewhere accessible and share it with your GP.

At Emerald Medical Centre, we encourage patients to look beyond current symptoms towards preventing illness before it develops. Sometimes, understanding your family’s past can help protect your future.
